Breaking News: Huge 8.9 Major Quake Hits Japan, Tsunami Follows

11 March 2011- A huge 8.9 major quake hit Honshu island in Japan just after 1300hrs local time. The giant tremor wreak havoc to infrastructure and buildings, broke fuel pipelines that resulted in massive fires.
Japan is one of the world's most seismically active areas, being part of the Pacific ring of fire. Strong aftershocks were also recorded by the United States Geological Survey [USGS]. The quake's epicenter was detected to have come from the deep bottom of the north Pacific ocean, near Sendai city with a depth of 24 km.
The photo taken from a video footage, show 6-10m high tsunami waves that washed-out the eastern coast of Honshu island, following the quake. Unconfirmed sources reported of several casualties to lives and properties.
In the Philippines, PHIVOLCS this afternoon upgraded the tsunami warning to alert level 2, covering 19 provinces in the eastern coast facing the Pacific ocean. Alert level 2 covers mandatory evacuation of coastal residents affected by the alert warning. Though only one meter high waves are expected to make landfall between 5-7 o'clock in the evening, all concerned coastal residents are advised to be on high alert but not to panic.
